The government of Canada has announced that they will be
placing their immigration plans on hold due to the ongoing coronavirus
(COVID-19) outbreak,
The federal government of Canada has confirmed that their
immigration programs are currently suspended.
Travel restrictions are also in place right now.
For this year, the government of Justin Trudeau had set
targets of 341,000 permanent residents, followed by 351,000 in 2021, and 361,000
permanent residents for 2022.
Kevin Lemkay, press
secretary for Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino, confirmed the news.
Secretary Lemkay said, “Currently, only Canadian citizens,
permanent residents and their immediate family are allowed to board flights to
Canada or to enter through the Canada-US border.”
Lemkay added, “Despite the current travel restrictions, IRCC
continues to accept and process applications.”
During the period,
where travel is restricted, the department says that no application in progress
will be closed or refused due to a lack of documentation.
Those applications will remain open even if normal timelines
for submitting biometrics or a medical exam are not met.
Peter Kent, a conservative immigration critic, supports the
current move of the government.
However, Kent is wondering if immigration should be kept on
pause if unemployment levels rise as high as expected.
In the last 2 weeks, over 1 million Canadians have applied
for employment insurance.
The federal government of Canada is expecting as many as 4
million people to apply for emergency benefits in the upcoming weeks.
A report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer is currently
expecting the unemployment rate to hit 15 percent this year.
Kent said, “We don’t know what we will be able to do to
redirect the unemployed coming out of the crisis.”
Kent added, “We need a lot more people but right now, we need
to pause.”
Canada will be dealing with a crippled economy and an
unusually higher unemployment for some time after the crisis is over.
