Alberta Is Taking Extra Steps To Help Foreign Workers That Are Vulnerable

Alberta is currently facilitating access to one of its province’s pathways to permanent residents so that foreign workers that are vulnerable can get it faster.

Temporary foreign workers that have been issued an open work permit by the federal government, because they are experiencing abuse or are at the risk of abuse at their job can apply in the AOS, which stands for the Alberta Opportunity Stream.

Foreign nationals and their family members that are holding a Vulnerable Workers Open Work Permit, which is also known as VWOWP, will be exempted from needing an LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment) to become eligible for the Alberta Opportunity Stream.

In other cases, a positive LMIA is necessary for the Alberta Opportunity Stream.

Employers that are frequently needed to complete an LMIA to support a foreign worker’s applications. This allows the government to understand that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill in for the job.

Many business leaders in Canada are currently calling for reforms to the LMIA process because it is extremely expensive and difficult to undertake.

It is often preferable for employers and immigrants to have the option of bypassing the LMIA process.

On March 13, 2020, the AINP (Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program) announced these changes, and said that vulnerable workers must also meet all other AOS criteria so they can be nominated in the program.

Things You Can Do If You Are Being Abused In Canada

The IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) offers a work permit to vulnerable workers and their families that are being abused or are at the risk of being abused at work.

VWOWP applicants are asked to create electronic documents for their applications by using a scanner or taking pictures.

They offer an instruction guide for applying for the work permit from inside Canada, as well as types of documents that will support their abuse claims.

After gathering all the documents that are required, you are asked to create an account so you can apply online.

In case it is impossible for you to apply online, the government of Canada says you should go to the closest IRCC office or contact their client support.
