India Remains Leading Source Country Of Canada’s New Permanent Resident Visa Holders

New data that was released by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) provides an early look at where the new immigrants of Canada were coming from in the early months of this year, before the coronavirus pandemic happened.

Until the end of April 2020, before Canada went into lockdown, the country reportedly welcomed 74,000 new permanent residents.

The data that was released by the IRCC, India came out on the top again.

India remained the leading source country of Canada’s new permanent resident visa holders.
Indian nationals accounted for 24 percent of new permanent residents in the first four months of 2020.


The country of India is currently the leading source of Canada’s immigrants since many of its citizens speak the language English frequently and possesses other characteristics that allow them to become eligible to become permanent residents of Canada.

Chinese immigrants have accounted for nearly 10 percent of the newcomers in the country. Last year, they were only at 9 percent.

Filipino immigration to Canada has also remained fairly consistent. They were at 8 percent in 2019 and 7 percent this year.
